Leave and shut off the lights and don't worry about the compressor running all night due to a hose rupture. When I walk in the shop and turn on those lights, on comes the compressor. My compressor is controlled by a contractor that's holding coil is wired to my work bench lights. I would use 10 gauge wire (8 gauge wouldn't be a bad idea, but shouldn't be needed ), a 30 amp breaker, and a simple 240 volt switch (see link below ). The above sizes are now correct for a single phase motor. Motor chart says you need a 60A breaker or 40A fuses.ĮDIT: Was mistakenly looking at the 3 phase side of the motor chart when originally posted the breaker and fuse sizes. Looking at a motor chart, based on the info you provided, I'd guess it's a 7.5hp motor? Given the FLA (Full Load Amps ), #10 THHN Copper, will be sufficient for a 80' run. LRA stands for Locked Rotor Amps, which is what the motor pulls (for an instant, everything working correctly ) when it first starts from a dead stop.

Then it says SF 1.15 Motor plate says 230 volt single phase FLA 21.5 (what exactly does that mean ) I assume its the amperage draw at full load. How do I find out how big of a breaker/ switch/ and how large gauge of wire to use?Ĭompressor is an Ingersoll -Rand 2 sage 230 volt 175 psi unit. The compressor will be on the end of about 80 foot of wire and I need a shutoff switch mid point in the wiring where it can be turned off when not needed.
